The tradition of pupils from each class gathering together to take the Nativity figures to the Crib, has been carried out since 1988, the year Bishop Ahern N.S. was officially opened.
Pupils and staff attend Mass in Leamlara Church on December 8th, the feast of the Immaculate Conception and afterwards pupils congregate to sing Christmas Carols while the figures are placed in the school crib.
Food Dudes is a programme designed to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models (the Food Dudes characters), repeated tasting and rewards. In large scale studies the programme has shown to be very effective and has long-lasting results.
In our school, junior classes, infants to 2nd class, participated in 16 tasting days during phase one and on each of these days children are given the opportunity to taste different types of fruit and vegetables. On each of these days fruit and vegetables will be provided and there are Food Dudes DVDs, letters, stickers and rewards. The senior classes, 3rd-6th will particpate in 4 tasting days and follow the same format on these days. At the moment all the children are enjoying tasting apples, bananas, mandrins, peppers, carrots, mangetout peas and cucumber!
Phase 2 extends to the home element of the Food Dudes programme by encouraging the children to bring their own fruit and veg to school every day in their special Food Dude containers which they will all receive.
